Hello, my name is Ann.
I live in Santa Rosa, California, and have been here since 1982.
I’m a retired firefighter and a retired physician assistant. I’m happily married for 37 years, the parent of 2 twenty- something young adults, both still living at home, and a grandmother of a toddler.
I’m thrilled for both of my successful careers, and more thrilled that my husband and I were both able to retire the same day, back in January of 2020, just before Covid closed everything down.
Covid re-wrote our retirement plans, as did the birth of our grandchild, whom we are primarily raising. Didn’t see either of those events coming.
I love to carve wood~ primarily basswood. I belong to a woodcarving guild here in Sonoma County.
I love trains (particularly steam trains), as does my husband. I grew up with n-scale trains. My husband grew up with HO-scale trains. When we first got married, we built a z-scale intricate coffee table train layout, and collected g-scale garden-sized trains. We now run a 7 1/2” between the rail (big enough to ride on) railroad museum here in Santa Rosa (Redwood Empire Live Steamers) in a local City park.
I’m very active in Scouting (Scouts BSA) locally as an Assistant Scout Master, a Venture Crew Associate Advisor, and the DisAbility Awareness Coordinator for my local council. I teach Disability Awreness locally, regionally, and nationally. I serve on the National Special Needs and Disabilities Committee for Scouts BSA.
In Scouts, I was on staff for the last National and World Jamborees (2017 and 2019 respectively), and I plan to be on staff for the next National Jamboree in 2023, focusing on the disAbility Awareness Challenge. I run the “Tent of Possibilities” where participants can not only learn about, but also experience what it is to have a disability, and then brainstorm to imagine better ways to overcome a given life challenge or adapt/ modify their environment to facilitate full inclusion.
I also love helping raise my granddaughter, Alice. Though I didn’t expect to be raising a child again, Alice is a blessing, as is reminding both my husband and myself to remember to take time to play while we help her learn.
My dear friend Rachel Brachman told me about LCL, and helped me sign up. I’m looking to relearn how to play creatively both for my grandbaby, as well as for the Scouts I serve.
