[Activity 3] Create a project connected to your interests

https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/686270155
What motivated you in creating this project? It is almost the end of our school year, and we had our last pep rally today. Our students are divided into three houses- House of Care, House of Creativity, and House of Connection. These three words have been the basis of our behavior expectations for the school year. Our students earn points for showing the characteristics of these three words.

Can you describe a moment of joy or frustration? This is our first year using the house system and our students have loved it! We were not sure how they would take to the change, but they really enjoy collecting points and having the pep rallies. It is bittersweet to know that we only have 16 days left of our school year. But I know that next year our program will be even stronger.

What helped you persist in face of challenges?**Making sure that I didn’t give up or get too distracted by other things at work. This project took a ridiculous amount of time. Not because it was difficult, but life is very busy around school right now, and I kept getting distracted.

Hi
This is my project (more or less finished): https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/684795978/

Hi everyone! Here’s my project:

As my Scratch project I thought It could be nice to create something to just introduce my self and where I live.
There’s been a long time since I’ve programmed at Scratch, so, before I start, I was afraid to have difficulties doing this challenge.
But, I started to do my project and I was glad to see that I still remember how scratch works and my project came easily, naturally.
I really want to do this so give up will never be an option.

I have tried to work on a simple and small project to bring some awareness on feelings.

What motivated you in creating this project?
The idea of sharing feelings.

Can you describe a moment of joy or frustration?
Well, at first, the video extension wouldn’t work. I tried more than 3 times.

What helped you persist in face of challenge?
Knowing that students could look up to this project.

I hope it works :slight_smile:

This week, I make an interactive thank you card as my present to my mother in celebrating Mother’s Day. I want it to become one of the most special presents my mom had ever received. Feel free to explore.

Mason Bees: LCL Passion Project

What motivated you in creating this project?
I use Scratch with my students often and try to ensure that I use it as well as both a model and as a way to improve my coding and computational skills. I created this project because I am an advocate for bees, especially mason bees, as I keep them in my backyard and for the fact that they are very proficient pollinators whom need protection. I thought this project would be a way to raise awareness of the mason bee and might encourage others to learn more about them.

Can you describe a moment of joy or frustration?
I was frustrated several times while creating this project as I couldn’t quite make my animation match the idea I had in my head. I knew what I wanted to do was possible, I just didn’t know the exact blocks and order to use. By having trouble personally and persisting, I can better work with my students as I can honestly say, “I know you are frustrated–I get frustrated, too! Let’s work through it!”

What helped you persist in the face of challenges?
One thing that helps me persist is the knowledge that I expect my students to persist in the face of challenges and how can I expect them to if I don’t? Additionally, to me, being able to work through a problem and succeed is a super cool feeling–especially at something that many people my age have very little knowledge and experience with!

What motivated you in creating this project?
I was recently introduced to Friedrich Froebel via https://gardenofchildren.org/ and want to explore Froebel’s block play through Scratch and later with p5js.
When I first opened Froebel’s Gift 3 I had no idea what I was supposed to do with the 8 cubes. I looked for instructions. Play with them. How? How do you play with blocks? I really felt intimidated.
I found images from old books on Froebel with squares drawn on grid paper of blocks placed in arrangements Froebel categorized by Knowledge, Life and Beauty. Many of the “Life” arrangements were things from the olden days. I really enjoyed recreating the “Beauty” arrangements but struggled to recall all the “Knowledge” related terms like edge, vertex, face so I pulled out my math books.
I have come to love daily block play with or without my grandson. I find it a way to express creativity and balance in an otherwise crazy world. I have come to appreciate the learning and notice an improvement in my own spatial skills as I try to recreate my grandson’s block creations when he instructs me to “Make this!”

Can you describe a moment of joy or frustration?
Figuring out the math can be frustrating but I love when it finally works. This type of learning is fun in that there is a purpose to learn. I set in my mind what it was that I wanted to do and then just searched through all the valuable resources and shared Scratch code to see how others moved and rotated things. I found numerous ways to do the same thing and came across ideas to implement on other projects. I just love the community support and enthusiasm for collaboration.

What helped you persist in face of challenges?
The past year I have spent exploring physical block play has opened my eyes to how woeful my education was and how ill prepared I am to being the guide my grandchildren need when I play with them. I started a Scratch project now with my grandson and we are just having the best time. I will post that to our LCL Scratch Studio when he is ready.

For this project just hit the flag then 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8

I have a passion for the structural beauty of nature. There is something so magical about underlying principles… I know it is not ‘magical’ but it sure fills me with wonder. My play line friend Rachel shared this amazing site with mehttps://www.facebook.com/Visual.mathemaics and I’m blown away by the mathematical sculptures video. I do not know that I will make a scratch project around this, but I felt compelled to share. I do have a passion for excellent resources that give us access to wonder. And on that note, I’m taking my self, my chair, my paints and my sketchbook up the mountain to visit the nuthatches and black-capped chickadees (if they’re still in my neighbourhood at this time…). And if they’re not, there are some trilliums, bloodwort, colt’s foot and trout Lily that may be up. Going to go savor me some outside wonder.

love both this adventure game project :dragon: :magic_wand: and your description of your debugging adventure too, @stephenandrewf ! I also often iteratively add to my code in small steps too, which as you say, really helps me build it up gradually from a more simple start into a bigger project over time : )

For this week, I use Scratch to talk about Tetris, one of the game I played a lot :slightly_smiling_face:

``` I spent many years reading to my son before bedtime. It was a wonderful time diving into such beautiful books with great illustrations. Since I first learned about Scratch I have been curious about bringing some of this magic to Scratch this is the reason why I chose to do a project inspired by one of these wonderful books. One moment of frustration using Scratch was trying to match times with all the sprites I used. I really wanted to reproduce some of the best parts of the book as I saw them so I persisted on the mission but I had a really hard time figuring out all the bugs I encounter in the way :) This was "hard fun" no dought.
Your mountain trip does sound a wonderous adventure!
you know I can’t wait to see your sketchbook : ) :sparkles:
I will post a direct link to project on Scratch if someone would like to remix it or give a heart. Here is a link to a project of @egle1 :slight_smile:
I like the idea of a journal so much! Thank you dear for the collection. As for me, it is really important to stop at the point and mention the most interesting parts of the conversations and interactions. It is inspiring for the next steps. :heart_eyes:
Soy profesora de Historia, quiero crear proyectos para mostrarle a los profesores que podemos usar Scratch en todas las asignaturas. Estoy trabajando un proyecto de la carrera espacial y saque un parte de ese proyecto para mostrarla ahora. Les comparto el link.
I’m running up at the end of the week but I did it! I was thinking about my interests. Which of them? How to choose one only! And I combine them - writing, Scratch, and sharing love.
