[Activity 1] Childhood Objects

I had a notebook when I was a child. My mum bought it for me. We usually wrote our favourite things in that notebook. My mum and used to write our favourite films, cartoons and books. We also saved a chapter to write books to read before we die. I lost it years ago but still I have a list to do before I die. That notebook kept me motivated. It was special for me like a best friend. Even now, I learn when I take notes. That notebook helped me discover my learning style.

Bayko set
I discovered Bayko when I was about 9 years old. A boy in my class brought his set to school and demonstrated how it worked. I fell in love with the idea of creating buildings and my parents bought me a set for my next birthday which I played with for many months.
I see now that Bayko was discontinued in 1967 (shows how old I am!). But what a loss - with a few metal rods and plastic bricks a child could become an architect for the day. I love Lego too. Is it better? No, just different.

The childhood thing that I still remember to this day is the clothes button. Why? The reason is that the more buttons there are on my clothes, the more I will want to count. Counting buttons was my first time learning math.

I do not remember a particular object that gripped me. But I grew up watching a lot of Indian mythology the the epic Ramayana. The story of the epic and the characters fascinated me. I used to act like them, dress like them and even say some of the famous lines.

Colored pencils and crayons! :rainbow: I used to draw a lot. I remember decorating my notebooks. I liked drawing pictures inspired by the stories or poems I read. I collected different types of colored pencil sets, looked at them, and rearranged them periodically. I think I was in awe of the colors and their relationships. Also, my parents tell me that drawing was a way of catching up with my older sister, who had started school. I’d sit next to her and ‘pretend’ to be a student.

Hard to say how this affected the way I think and learn. But maybe, as a designer, it has led me to enjoy divergent thinking on a blank canvas. I learn best empirically, by trying and experiencing, rather than via pure theory and abstraction. I like to get my hands dirty and think with real examples, together with people. I’m a visual learner too. Last but not least, I like using emojis to express my thoughts and feelings!

I mainly remember two thing from my childhood. Playing with blocks, any kind that I could find around, and Fabric. Blocks I mainly used to build anything, building a house, a beautiful one, or build a small city. Fabrics, the easiest option to wrap around myself to make a dress for role playing as a princess, a noble woman, someone other than a little girl.

As for the way it influence my learning process… I think it pushed me toward self-learning, figuring stuff on my own, finding my own way of doing stuff. It is not always the most promising way, but it definitely helps me be a creative person.

This is a really useful tool to teach kids how to work with their hands, before starting the process of writing.

It is really good to know that you like this game, as it is not only the part of our childhood, but also play a significant role in our learning. we still play this game as a family "sunday " tradition.

I loved playing board games with my brother and cousins. I learned to count, wait my turn for play, multiplication, follow rules and enjoy the play even if I wasn’t the winner.

One object that I can think of that influenced me was chalk. Maybe not an object, but a material. I remember using it to draw on the floor, to sketch games, to mix with water and dissolve it, etc. I believe it helped me develop my creativity and understanding that we can do a lot with simple resources and ideas.

My childhood objects are solar system. I’m so excited with solar system after watched documentary show on TV. So excited because I could find out another objects outside our earth at childhood. From that, I always think what happened on the outside before born, this time, & in the future, is there any living things like in our earth, etc. Although I’m not in astronomy concentration & just physics graduated & coding teacher, I’m still curious about it
