Hi Debbie, I just read your reply and would love to learn more about hte work you do at the Children’s museum. What kind of STEAM activities do you do… how do you activate LCL in children visitations, specifically if time is limited and its a group visit.

I’ve always been a huge fan of creative learning, and I’ve been a bit frustrated with how hard it is to build it in to the teaching I get to do.

Would be great to see how we can activate the 4P approach in an interactive exhibit in a museum. I was caught by your ground, having a mix of Psych, and video game AI, and attending this… perhaps we can talk more about digital interactive exhibits and LCL.

Cool! Here Paco from Málaga (though I’m temporarily writing from Huelva), where are you teaching?? I’m a musician but got interested in video game development a couple of years ago, ended up writing some music for VGs. Found it a very interesting field, both in itself (the somewhat playful approach I often found, the design approach, which I wasn’t used too at all… Very four-Ps in a way) and from a musical perspective (adaptive music and so).

Uhhhh, that question 
Nice to meet you, I just had a kid a couple of months ago and I kind of connect with this feeling of pause button, then rethink what next. I’ve taught music for the last decade, and always found an atraction to this creative learning approach. Also, I had some sparse contact with the VG development world, and found lost of connections with the four Ps (thinking about the development side, though I also think that there’s creative potential on the actual player side).
The “what are they learning” is a difficult question, and I’ve experienced quite closely experiments where the teaching aim was so obvious that it didn’t quite feel like a game any more (sort of gamification in the most naive sense). It reminds me of something I heard a couple years ago, from an Ed Game designer, who said he was often approached with things like “hey, I want to make a game for maths to be fun for my students”. His answer was sort of “if you don’t already think maths are fun already, we have a problem”…

Totally agree!
My field was mostly major, popular video games. Popular perception is that these teach nothing, but is never the case. A game inherently teaches SOMETHING or it’s not a game at all. An example is online shooters training visual attention and acuity. There are similar results of mental rotation ability. The challenge is reverse-engineering from a learning goal toward a fun game. Popular games almost exclusively design from a fun game mechanic to it-doesn’t-matter-what-players-learn.
All that said, games like Minecraft are probably a lot closer to the LCL framework
