[Wk 1 Reflection] Pick a P!

Hi! In response to how to nurture collaboration. I have found that after students finish a Scratch project, they love to share it. Some students can`t finish on time. So their peers go and help them. They must try to guide them, not do the project for them. Others love to show their new projects or unique ideas. Their classmates come to see the project and ask them, how this or that was done. It´s a start in collaboration. What do you think?

Love this. Do you coach them on that?

Hello! I would say “passion” because it’s my energy while teaching. But, I will say “peers” because it’s so exciting to see children learning together and observing and guiding them to the peer-to-peer learning.

Felizmente, a maioria das atividades que realizo são apaixonante, mobilizam-me, engajam-me e me promovem Paixão.

Passion and projects. Projetos e paixão.
I believe that any project becomes feasible and fun if you are passionate about it. Recently I did a consulting job on makerspaces and the school board only wanted me to present projects in which the final product was STEM related. Arts were simply a means to it. But it had to be rockets, constructions, robots, machines etc etc. And I just think that no one is obliged to like robots and rockets! It is essential to be able to instrumentalize technologies, and math, and physics, but it is not mandatory to be passionate about STEM. I’m not, honestly. My passion is imagining stories and creating, just like the first girl from Scratch. What I wish is to transform the way we teach history, by using technology in our favor and stimulating the building of student’s autonomy and critical knowledge. For example, I would love to make a role playing game of medieval life (so to teach medieval period) where students are the characters and have to act as such. So I’m an advocate for projects we are passionate about, no matter what field of knowledge it envolves!

I’ll start with Projects. I love the idea of PBL and I think this approach can give a place for the other three P’s - passion, peers, play. Projects help teachers get their heads around HOW we are going to incorporate the other three P’s in a meaningful way while still getting through the required content knowledge that they must cover per standards from September-June. PBL can give teachers and schools the structure they need to tap into the students’ passion, have them share and learn from peers, can give them the space and time to play with their ideas. However, PBL really requires a shift in how we structure the time from 8am-3pm, 9 months of the year. To really benefit from the power of PBL, the students need time and this is often not offered to them .

Play. I teach at an international school in Thailand, and I agree that many schools are reducing the “free play” time from kindergarten. It is common to see kids as young as 4 years old focusing on completing worksheets. The good news is that for the last 2 years, we have increased the time to play and reduce the number of workbooks that they need complete by the end of the academic year. Global School Play Day, Outdoor play day and other global events are sending a clear message to school management from all around the world. Play is a Right and Children should have that time to create, explore, and just be children.

I choose “Project”.
First of all, projects are exciting. It’s an ongoing process that includes all sorts of interesting activities and tasks for students to learn, develop and grow. Teachers and students are able to track their growth and journey towards the end of the project.

I PICK PASSSION!!! Without passion nothing works in my opinion! Passion make us move towards any direction and purpose!
