[Round 3] Introduce yourself!

#261

Hello. My name is Erin. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I work at a bank in the IT department.

I am curious about how we can use current and new technologies to teach young children about creative learning.

Looking forward to this course!

Hi, fellow learners! I am an educational specialist interested in using inclusive strategies to engage youth from all backgrounds in interesting, meaningful, and relevant learning activities. In particular, I do a lot of work in Makerspaces, using tools such as 3D printers, drones, robots, and e-textiles to teach spatial skills and STEAM content. If you have questions about implementing these tools, please let me know!

Hello everyone
I love reading your introductions and voices from all around the world with a similar thread of passion for creative learning.

I am a mother of two, Code Club volunteer, and work part-time as a Learning Designer in higher education (my background is as a PHP web developer and librarian).

I love being involved with kids learning to code through play as t have always loved helping others to learn but have never felt comfortable with the model of teaching that is about presenting expertise. It just isn’t me. I have found a lovely niche in Code Clubs in public libraries, where I can encourage kids into playful approaches to learning together. My favourite Code Club session was back in winter, and our last Code Club for the term. We did a Snowball Scratch project from Code Club. I then surprised the kids with an indoor snowball flight in the library with woolly snowballs that I had made. Of course this was “research” so that we could better understand the trajectory of a thrown snowball.

This is my second attempt at participating in LCL as I struggled to keep up last time, but determined, even with a late start to join in and have fun playing!
Cheers
Angela

Hi,
You wrote “I do a lot of work in Makerspaces, using tools such as 3D printers, drones, robots, and e-textiles to teach spatial skills and STEAM content.” I am just curious as to what you mean by spatial skills.

“I then surprised the kids with an indoor snowball flight in the library with woolly snowballs that I had made. Of course this was “research” so that we could better understand the trajectory of a thrown snowball.”
That must have been a hoot. Snowballs are definitely forbidden in our schools because of possible eye injuries (and the arguments and disputes that come up) and I have been very tempted to bring out our safety glasses so we can have a grand battle, but that would definitely blur the boundaries… and break the rules…
